NOW RECRUITING FOR CO-ED JUNIOR ROLLER DERBY AGES 7-17
We are an open gender group looking for skaters to play roller derby with North Texas Fallout. We welcome skaters 18 and under of all sizes, shapes, and skill levels on our junior team. It’s a great way to make new friends while learning strategy, teamwork and sportsmanship in an encouraging environment. You do not have to know how to skate or have roller derby experience. We will teach you how to skate and the fundamentals of derby!
As new members, you will train separately from the veteran skaters until you are skilled enough to pass a minimum skills test. Once you pass the JRDA level 2 assessment, you are eligible to practice with the league and can participate in scrimmages. After you pass the JRDA level 3 assessment and pass the WFTDA Minimum Skills requirement, you will be placed on the North Texas Fallout Roster and can participate in full contact bouts!

SAFETY GEAR & EQUIPMENT
Full protective gear is required during every practice. Skaters will not be permitted to skate during any practice without wearing full gear, that fits securely and is in good condition.
- Helmet (No bicycle helmets)
- Elbow Pads
- Knee Pads
- Wrist Guards
- Mouth guard
- Quad Roller Skates
If you do not have safety gear or skates, contact us for the use of our loaner gear. You may borrow all the equipment you need (skates, knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet), with the exception of a mouth guard. A mouth guard is mandatory and can be purchased at any sporting goods store.
RESOURCES FOR REQUIRED GEAR & EQUIPMENT
Beginner helmet, pads and mouth guards can be purchased at local sporting goods stores, however you will likely find as your skater grows out of their gear and their skills improve, a higher quality, derby specific gear will be desired.
Quality, derby specific, speed skates are the most important piece of equipment your skater will desire. While any quad skates will make do for beginner skaters, non-derby skates will hinder your skaters progress. Ideally, skaters look for the ability to change wheels, toe stops, plates and trucks to better suit their skating style as well as the surface they are skating on.
SKILL LEVELS AND PROGRESSION
No prior skating skills required! We will teach you how to skate. Roller Derby requires a special set of skills unique to the sport. We encourage our new skaters to hit the rink as often as possible to gain confidence on skates. Many of the skills required in roller derby are learned entirely through repetition and tenacity. We will teach you all you need to know as long as you have the willingness to learn and work hard.
Beginning Skaters – Beginning skaters are learning to skate and practicing basic safety, skating, stopping, and falling. They do not play derby, but focus on learning basic skating skills and the very basics of derby.
Skill Level I – Level I skaters are becoming masters of their skates, learning basic game play and teamwork, and beginning to scrimmage and bout positionally. They are beginning to learn more advanced rules and strategies.
Skill Level II – Level II skaters are playing using pushing contact only in scrimmages and bouts. They are also learning advanced teamwork, rules and regulations, and strategic play; practices emphasize fluidity of motion and building skeletal muscular strength and endurance. Typically, skaters are age 9 or above when they are able to meet Level II requirements, but there is no set age requirement.
Skill Level III – Skaters are demonstrating adult-level competency on skates and with the rules. Level III skaters practice, scrimmage and bout using full-contact rules. In addition, Level III skaters are expected to help teach lower-level skaters and to be ambassadors for the league.
SAFETY
Junior Roller Derby is a full contact sport and per JRDA (Junior Roller Derby Association) every skater must wear full protective gear. The safety of our skaters is our #1 priority and the use of full safety gear is required and strictly enforced at all times. Our safety staff has also been trained in CPR, First Aid and to recognize the signs and symptoms of concussions.
Every coach, trainer and volunteer involved in the North Texas Fallout Junior Roller Derby program has undergone a thorough background check and adheres to the North Texas Fallout Code of Conduct.
AGE REQUIREMENTS
North Texas Fallout Junior Roller Derby is open to all skaters, ages 7-17.
Skaters should be 7 years of age on or before the first day of practice. Skaters continue to be eligible until age 17, or age 18 AND a high school student in the 12th grade or below during some part of the current academic year. High School Seniors who turn 18 during their senior year may continue skating with their current junior league until September 15th of the year in which they turn 18 and graduate high school.
We hope to see you at our next practice!
