A Look Back At 2017
North Texas Fallout had a busy year in 2017. Let’s take a moment to look back at all that we did!!
In January, our Travel Team, with only 11 skaters at the time, headed down to Houston for the 2nd Annual Southern Showdown!! Our small roster of amazing skaters did a fantastic job and left it all on the track.
In February, the team (including skaters, siblings, and parents) decked themselves out in masks and beads and skated their way through the Mardi Gras Parade in Lake Dallas. We love doing parades and join in as many as we can in our area!! We even had a booth set up in the vendor/activity area! Spin the wheel and you won a prize! It was a fun and chilly time with skating tricks and balloon animals and tasty Cajun faire and a crawfish-eating contest! (You can try again next year, Coach!)
In March, our Travel Team AND our Level 2 skaters loaded up the vehicles and headed down to San Antonio for a double-header with the San Antonio Sugar Skulls. Our Travel Team played an amazing opening bout, bringing home a win. THEN, our Level 2 skaters got to take the floor! We love to provide our Level 2 skaters opportunities to gain bouting experience and are very grateful to the Sugar Skulls for setting up the bout!
April was all about hunkering down and getting ready for our upcoming bouts in May and June! We had several skaters level up in April – some new Level 2’s, some new Level 3’s, and a new Level 3 bout-assessed skater!! April, also, brought us the much-anticipated super-cool swag of our team track jackets and hoodies!
In May, North Texas Fallout hosted a Travel Team bout with Lone Star Chaos from Houston AND a Level 2/Level 3 Mashup. We love getting experience for those Level 2’s. Both games were action-packed and a lot of fun with the Mashup ending with only a one-point difference!!!
June brought another bout with the San Antonio Sugar Skulls. This time on our home turf at Lone Star Indoor Sports Center here in Denton! This time it was a double-header with our adult league friends, North Texas Roller Derby’s Fighting Unicorns! It was a really great night of derby for everyone!!
Holiday time in July brought another opportunity for a PARADE!! Yay! With skaters, siblings, and parents all sporting their red, white, and blue spirit, North Texas Fallout demonstrated their skill with tricks and hills and passing out candy. 😊 The team, also, took some time out for some summer-time fun in July to help beat the summer heat by getting together for a super-sized water gun & balloon fight at a local park. It was wet and crazy and a lot of fun!
We teamed up, again, in August with the adults, North Texas Roller Derby. This time it was a double-header Mashup!! The juniors played first with a Level 2/Level 3 superhero vs. villains themed mashup! The costumes were great!! It was awesome to have skaters from teams in and outside of Texas joining us!! Also in August was our big Chipotle fundraising event!! Thank you so very much to all our families and fans who came out to help support our League!!
September provided us with some more “down time” to focus on practice and skills. September was, also, our month of preparing our “coffin” (boxcart car) for the Coffin Races as part of Denton’s Day of the Dead Festival coming up in October. Thank you so much to all our awesome families who share their weekend time with our team to help make these fun events a reality!! And, we can’t leave out mentioning that September, also, brought us the birthday of our Head Coach, Tim Shires (Papa Bear). 😊 With the help of Coach Prophet, the skaters put together a photo album with all their pictures, including a personalized, hand-written note from each skater under their photo. There were cheers and singing and tears and hugs and balloons and lots of love. We wouldn’t be the wonderful team that we are today without our AMAZING coaches!!!
Coffin Races! Woot! That was the focus of October. This was North Texas Fallout’s second year participating in the event and it was just as fun as ever!! Our car had a few issues. There were a few malfunctions. There were some mishaps. But, mostly, there was A LOT of fun!!! Big shout out, again, to our amazing families! Without the cooperation and time and effort and support of all the parents and siblings, we wouldn’t be able to do all of this!! Oh, and, we can’t forget the Twilight Lantern Parade at the end of the evening. It was certainly a memorable one as the “pace car” at the front of the parade thought we were still in the races! It was fortunate for our skaters that they were on wheels!
Things quieted down in November with a focus, once again, on skill-work and training all our new skaters. We did take a weekend for some volunteer work as our League partnered with the Keep Denton Beautiful organization and spent an afternoon cleaning up the roadside in our designated area. The team, of course, managed to have some fun while, also, being very productive and doing a great job cleaning up!
And, finally, December. We finished the year with another double-header: a Travel Team bout with the Tulsa Derby Brats followed by a Level 2/Level 3 Mashup (Polar Bears vs Yetis!). And, of course, we had to end the year with some fun – a holiday party!! There was pizza and skating and games and fun and snakes and a turtle and a coatimundi!! It was definitely a party to remember! Thank you to our Fallout family who is in wildlife rescue for helping our year end with so much excitement and fun!!
It was an amazing year for North Texas Fallout! 2017 brought many new wonderful skaters and families to us and saw our team double in size and grow even stronger as a team. And, 2018 is promising to be just as wonderful as we turn our focus to hosting our very first TOURNAMENT!! Woot! Mark your calendars to come join us the weekend of March 3rd & 4th for the 1st Annual Bluebonnet Brawl!!
